Nigeria: Post-Election Riot Hurts The Nation

Oh, Oh Nigeria what are you doing to my poor heart. I proudly praised the way you conduct yourself during the election campaign. Aside from a few rows here and there on Election Day, I was optimistic that you were giving an example to the majority of African nations who can’t hold an election without violence and bloodshed. I cannot judge that everything was 100% free and fair but which election is? Everyone from the public to the media is telling different stories, so this article is not focused on who won the election but the need for the people to come together as one nation and fight as one nation from this day on. There are winners and losers in every election. If there’s clear election rig we should fight it, but we should overcome disappointment without bloodshed.
Nigeria is a major oil producer, has economic power on the continent and holds regional and global strategic importance. But for the country to obtain its well deserved place in the world it will need stability and unity amongst the population. And that is where you come in. A good number of our leaders are puppets, we the people holds the true power to carry our nation forward. Wielding machetes and bombing churches and mosques does not benefit a single soul but hurt ourselves. No government member died, no police were hurt, and both presidential candidates are doing more than fine. Normal hard working people lost their lives. People who could be your brother, your sister and or your neighbor are dead and gone. This is not our spirit, we are better people than this. Oh yes we are way better than this.
What ever happens, who ever runs off with the election victory there’s a task ahead for each Nigerian, whether Muslim, Christian or other beliefs, to carry your great country to the future. You will not always agree, and you will not always be on the same page. If we cannot expect from married couples to agree on everything, we sure as hell cannot expect from 140 million people to agree on everything. But whatever our disagreements are we must always deal with it in a civil way. We simply cannot let our disagreements lead us to the destruction of one and another. The people are one, no matter who’s in charge, we must always be critical at their leadership. Is he good to me, to my neighbor and at last to my country? These are the questions we should ask ourselves and answer truthfully. I hope that the people whose votes went to Goodluck Jonathan will seek to that he do just to the people whose vote he did not get.
