RELEASED: Welcome Home AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Freedom Fighter AUNG SAN SUU KYI, the daughter of General Aung San, an independence hero and father of the nation, is released from jail. She has spent 15 years of the last 21 years under house arrest because of her fight for democracy in Myanmar. She hasn’t seen her children in years and she will have to be thought how to use a Black Berry and an iPhone. But one thing no one will have to teach her is how to lead her people.

The release of Suu Kyi will not put some sense into the countries totalitarian regime. After all it was their decision to release her after they held a sham election just days before her release on November 7, 2010. Of course no one, unless you got your head in the sand, really believed that the election would have usher in an era of true democracy in Myanmar. Unlike Mandela where his release marked the end of Apartheid, I do not see the people of Myanmar singing anytime soon Hooray! Hooray!

The world community will have to step up their effort and condemn the oppression of the resilient people of Myanmar by the military junta. We must not forget the thousands of other political prisoners incarcerated under vague laws in Myanmar. It is yet to be seen what the terms of release are, but power change is unlikely to be one of them. The struggle continues, but today is a good day. This is a big personal victory for Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Myanmar have something to celebrate as well, they have their voice back.
